Disaster Strikes! But we're prepared….
Dr Laurie Mazurik, Emergency Medicine staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, recently led Sunnybrook’s mass casualty exercise, which this year recreated the Wellesley Fire, a massive 6-alarm blaze that gutted a Toronto highrise in 2010. Several Ontario hospitals, and a wide array of health care disciplines came together to play out the horrifying scenes on a cool Saturday in March. “SARS really put emergency preparedness on the forefront of our minds,” says Dr. Laurie Mazurik, the grand maestro of this event (known officially as the Strategic Lead of Sunnybrook’s Disaster Emergency Preparedness). “It made me and others think we certainly need to prepare for future events, as this wouldn’t be the last.” Check out this cool video on youtube of the event, and look out for future exercises for opportunities to participate. Contact Dr Mazurik at lmazurik@gmail.comfor more information.

Recent study by Dr Clare Atzema profiled in the New York Times! |
|
A new study by Dr Clare Atzema published in the July X issue of CMAJ was profiled in the New York Times among many otherTV and print news outlets.
http://www.nytimes.com/ 2011/07/19/health/research /19patterns.html?_ r=1&partner=rss&emc=rss
Her study found that among a population-based sample of 4403 heart attack patients who had chest pain (from across Ontario), married men were much less likely to endure the chest pain and present late to an ED for care than their single counterparts (OR 0.35, p<0.001). Among women having a heart attack however, there was no significant association with delayed presentation and marital status (OR 1.36, p=0.55).
Congratulations to Clare on generating such high-profile research!
